Wooden spoons – local vs online

Last week I decided to make the move to selling my wooden spoons online.  As part of my research on the best way to post spoons to customers I asked this question on the facebook group Spoon carving, Greenwood work and Sloyd.  I got a lot of great advice but also several people raising the point of why sell online?  Shouldn’t you be promoting ‘buy local’ and selling your wares through local shops.

I think it’s a good point and one that I agree with and in fact feel quite strongly about.  I do sell at local markets and at a local store.  The fact is though, that during the long winter month footfall in both markets and stores drops dramatically.  For example the resident population of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is 22,542 (PCNPA website).  While every year the park receives 1.1 million holiday makers (PCNPA website).  Now I’m going to take the liberty of assuming that the majority of these visitors come between April and September.  Which means that during the long winter months my potential market drops by up to 99.89%.  That’s quite a drop!

So by going online am I turning my back on local trade and businesses?  I don’t think so, surely there’s no reason why the local and online realms can’t cohabit peacefully, perhaps they’ll even benefit each other?

Now the only question is how to actually sell online?  Think there might be a fair amount of head scratching before I get the answer to that one.

    Hi Dave.
    I think we met on a hedge layng course at coppicewood a couple of years ago. Glad to see we have both been inspired by greenwood working to try to make a go of it. I live in Northumberland so like you we have summer tourists but at this time its all very quiet with just locals buying basics at markets.
    I am also just beginning to sell spoons, bowls, honey drizzlers etc and have gone for both local markets and online. Initially i set up an etsy shop tho there is less control of the layout and they do charge fees at every stage. However, it does have plenty of footfall and i have plenty of views tho still no sales thru it. I have just opened my own site which gives me more control on layout etc with no charge per item or ler sale tho there is the monthky fee.
    I have found it much more productive to have face to face contact where people can cbat to me about what i do and the things i am selling, with lots better chance of a sale.
    Its this story telling aspect that i think matters to people and so will re-visit my site to try to express the enthusiasm that its possible to convey in a conversation. I need to keep interest up thru the quiet months and hope online will help with this. Trying to get the web address everywhere will help, having it on every post etc. Also looking at local galeries to have a small display if only to generate interest a d bring more people to the site.

      Thanks very much for your comment and tips re selling. I’m sorry it has taken so long to reply. A mass of spam on my comments that the legitimate ones often get overlooked. How is the greenwood going now – I’d be very interested to see your site. I’m currently doing some winter hedgelaying with Nick and Barb, head instructors at Coppicewood. Great fun.
