About the spoon carving course:

This full day course (10-16:30) allows you to take a log blank and turn it into a spoon you’ll be able to use in the kitchen forever. We teach you how to safely and effectively use axes and different knives to shape your spoon, giving you the perfect introduction into making spoons for yourself at home.

About your teacher:

The course is taught by me (David Hunter). I am a full time coppice and green woodworker.  I have been carving spoons for over 10 years now and I love the process of it. It is relatively simple and accessible in regards set up – you only need a few tools and minimal space. Yet it offers a lifetime of enjoyment as it is always possible to improve and explore new shapes and techniques.

Skills you will learn:

• Safe and effective use of a carving axe
• Safe and effective use of a carving knife and hook knife
• An understanding of what green wood work is and why we make spoons from fresh wood
• An understanding of the properties of wood and how they effect your spoon carving.
• The basics on how to keep your tools sharp.

• Beautiful fresh (green) wood to make your introduction to carving as accessible as possible.
• Top quality and razor sharp tools, because it is no fun learning to carve with blunt tools.
• Quality and friendly instruction in a relaxed, no pressure learning environment. I only take 6 students per course so that everyone has all the one on one tuition time that they want / need.
• A hearty home made vegetarian lunch and cake and biscuits to keep you going. Plenty of tea and coffee.

Venue:

The spoon carving course takes place at the wonderful Coppicewood College workshop in Pengelli Forest near Newport, Pembrokeshire. Pengelli is a 100 acres of oak woodland – a truly beautiful place to spend the day.
